*The dollar’s rally has paused. DXY eased from about 102.61 to 102.16 as oil and Treasury yields fell, though geopolitical risk and relatively high U.S. yields still provide support.
*Gold remains under pressure. Spot gold was near $4,160 despite the softer dollar, as elevated yields and expectations of another Fed hike offset geopolitical demand.
*U.S. CPI is the next major catalyst. The report is due Wednesday at 1230 GMT. A hotter than expected reading could strengthen the dollar and pressure gold; softer data could favor the reverse.
The U.S. dollar has lost some momentum ahead of September CPI, after the dollar index retreated from Monday’s roughly 18-month high of 102.61 to about 102.16 early Wednesday. Lower oil prices and easing Treasury yields reduced the immediate case for further Fed tightening. New York Fed President John Williams added to the pullback by saying he expects one more hike this year but sees no need for additional increases in 2027. Markets were pricing a 77% chance of an October hold, leaving December as the more likely window for the next move.
The yen gained only modestly from the softer dollar. USD/JPY remained near 158.32, while EUR/USD was around 1.1203 and GBP/USD near 1.3256 early Wednesday. Japan’s September producer-price inflation of 6.8% year on year, though below the 7.6% forecast, kept the possibility of further Bank of Japan tightening in view. Intervention concern also limits confidence in chasing USD/JPY higher. At the same time, elevated U.S. yields and Middle East energy risks continue to give the dollar underlying support.
Gold has remained subdued despite the dollar’s retreat. Spot gold fell 0.3% to $4,157.90 an ounce by Tuesday afternoon in New York; December gold futures settled at $4,177.30. Spot was little changed near $4,160 early Wednesday. The distinction matters: the futures settlement and later spot quote do not show a fresh $17 rally. Investors are weighing geopolitical demand for gold against still-high yields and the prospect of another Fed hike this year. Silver, platinum and palladium also declined in Tuesday’s Reuters snapshot, indicating that the weakness was broader than gold alone.
Tonight’s U.S. CPI is the shared turning point for both markets. Headline inflation is expected to rise 0.6% month on month and 3.6% year on year; the release is due at 8:30 p.m. Singapore time. A higher than expected reading, particularly in core inflation, could lift yields and the dollar and weigh on gold. Softer data could have the opposite effect, although renewed oil or geopolitical risk may complicate that response. These are potential market reactions, not CPI results.

The Dollar Index remains in an overall uptrend ,trading around 102.10 after rallying from the 98.65 support area and breaking above several key resistance levels. However, price has recently pulled back from the 102.50 resistance and is showing signs of weakening momentum, with immediate support at 101.70.
RSI has fallen to around 44, slipping below the neutral 50 level and indicating increasing bearish pressure, while MACD has turned bearish, with the MACD line crossing below the signal line and the histogram expanding in negative territory. From here, a break below 101.70 could trigger a deeper retracement toward 100.65, while a sustained hold above support may allow the Dollar Index to consolidate before attempting another move toward 102.50. A breakout above this resistance could open the way toward the 103.00 area. Overall, the broader structure remains bullish, but the short-term outlook is turning cautious to bearish as momentum weakens.
Resistance Levels: 102.50, 103.40
Support Levels: 101.70, 100.65
