Key Takeaways:

*WTI outperformed Brent: WTI rose 3.03% to $97.97, while Brent slipped 0.13% to $105.92, reflecting stronger support from US inventory tightening.

*The crude draw partly reflected disrupted supply: US stocks fell 8.6 million barrels, driven partly by hurricane shut-ins and lower imports, alongside stronger refinery processing.

*Diesel remains a pressure point: Distillate inventories declined while gasoline stocks increased, showing uneven conditions across fuel markets.

Market Summary:

Oil remains supported by tighter US inventories and persistent disruption risks, although measures to improve shipping and release emergency stocks are limiting gains. WTI settled Thursday, October 15, up 3.03% at $97.97 a barrel, while Brent slipped 0.13% to $105.92, highlighting stronger support for the US benchmark. EIA data showed commercial crude inventories fell 8.6 million barrels to 415.6 million, substantially exceeding the expected 288,000-barrel draw. However, the decline partly reflected Hurricane Isaias-related production shut-ins and lower imports, alongside higher refinery processing, making it an imperfect signal of stronger demand. Distillate inventories fell 2.5 million barrels to 102.6 million, while gasoline stocks increased 3.5 million barrels and Cushing crude inventories rose 1.9 million barrels. The figures point to particular tightness in diesel rather than uniformly strengthening fuel demand.

Geopolitical developments continue to threaten both crude transportation and refined-product availability. Attacks around the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns about shipment delays, insurance costs and tanker availability, with the supplied reporting identifying the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride as a vessel that sank after being struck by an Iranian projectile. Iran also reported a tanker fire in the Gulf of Oman, although the cause and responsibility remained unclear. Continued Saudi-Houthi fighting, including Thursday’s missile attack on the presidential palace complex in Aden, adds to regional uncertainty. Separately, Ukraine resumed strikes on Russian refining infrastructure, with an attack causing a fire at the Ryazan refinery after Kyiv abandoned its brief pause in energy-related attacks. The extent of refinery damage and any sustained output loss remain unconfirmed, but renewed strikes threaten the Russian fuel supplies Washington has sought to bring back into international markets. These developments support a risk premium without establishing an equivalent, lasting loss of crude production.

Potential US relief for previously sanctioned tankers provides a counterweight by raising hopes of lower freight rates and more flexible oil movements. Washington is considering allowing legally permitted cargoes to travel on some vessels associated with the “shadow fleet”; the US Energy Department said the measure would not help Russia move oil or petroleum products. However, Kpler’s assessment in the supplied reporting cautioned that sanctions removal would not automatically make those ships commercially usable, given vessel age, insurance, certification and maintenance constraints. The IEA’s October 15 statement also confirmed accelerated delivery of around 100 million barrels remaining under its March emergency programme, including more than 20 million barrels of diesel. These volumes largely represent the completion of existing commitments. Reuters reported disappointment over the absence of a firm commitment to additional immediate barrels, while Spain announced a 4.4-million-barrel October release.

The near-term outlook therefore depends on whether physical supply relief can arrive faster than fresh disruptions develop. Brent eased to $105.51 and WTI to $97.43 by 00:12 GMT Friday, reflecting continued sensitivity to tanker-policy discussions despite Thursday’s strong WTI advance. Recovering US offshore production could soften inventory support, while actual reserve deliveries and cheaper freight could ease supply pressures. Conversely, further Russian refinery outages or interruptions to Gulf shipping could sustain diesel tightness and lift prices again. Thursday’s softer dollar provided an additional supportive backdrop, but higher energy costs also contributed to the 1.3% monthly jump in US producer prices, reinforcing inflation concerns that could eventually constrain consumption. Oil remains vulnerable to sharp headline-driven moves, with confirmed shipment flows, refinery operating rates and the pace of emergency-stock deliveries offering the clearest guide to whether current tightness is easing.

Technical Analysis

Crude Oil, H4:

Crude oil is trading around 95.90  maintaining a short-term recovery supported by a rising trendline after rebounding from the 86.75–88.20 support zone. Price recently broke above the 94.05 and 95.90 resistance levels, briefly reaching 98.05 before pulling back, making 95.90 a key level to watch for support.

RSI stands at around 58, remaining above the neutral 50 level despite easing from recent highs, while MACD stays above the zero line with the MACD line above the signal line, suggesting that bullish momentum remains intact but is beginning to moderate. From here, holding above 95.90 could support another attempt toward 98.05, with a breakout potentially opening the way toward 100.60. However, a break below the rising trendline and 95.90 support could trigger a pullback toward 94.05 and 91.80. Overall, the short-term bias remains cautiously bullish as long as crude oil holds above its rising trendline and key support levels.

 Resistance Levels: 98.05, 100.60

Support Levels: 94.05, 91.80
