*Dollar recovers: DXY rose approximately 0.2% to 101.98, supported by higher Treasury yields and French political uncertainty.
*Fed pause does not end tightening risk: Markets priced an 83% chance of an October hold, alongside a 94% chance of a December hike.
*Gold remains under pressure: Bullion traded around $4,127–$4,136 early Tuesday as elevated yields and a technology-stock rebound limited demand.
The US dollar recovered modestly on Monday as higher Treasury yields and European political uncertainty outweighed weaker US housing sentiment. The Dollar Index rose approximately 0.2% to 101.98, ending two consecutive declines, while the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to around 5.135%. French unrest added support for the greenback as investors sold French government bonds, widening the France–Germany 10-year yield spread to approximately 147.3 basis points. However, dollar strength remained uneven: improving risk appetite supported the Australian and New Zealand dollars, while USD/JPY traded near 158.56 in early Tuesday trading.
Federal Reserve expectations remain central to both the dollar and gold. Reuters’ early-Tuesday report cited an 83% probability of an October hold, but a 94% probability of a December hike, indicating that a near-term pause would not necessarily end the tightening cycle. Meanwhile, US housing data highlighted the economic cost of elevated borrowing rates: the NAHB Housing Market Index fell to 29 from 32, its lowest since June 2012, with 43% of builders cutting prices. These developments create competing pressures—persistent inflation supports restrictive policy, while weakening housing demand argues for caution. My assessment is that this limits confidence in a sustained dollar rally without further support from economic data or yields.
Gold consequently struggled to sustain its earlier recovery. At 01:02 GMT Tuesday, Reuters reported spot gold at $4,126.84 an ounce, down 0.3%, and December futures at $4,146.00; a subsequent 02:26 GMT report placed spot bullion around $4,136.46. Elevated yields increased the opportunity cost of holding gold, while the recovery in technology stocks likely reduced some defensive demand. The Nasdaq gained 1.11% and the S&P 500 rose 0.41% on Monday, although the Dow slipped and market breadth remained weak, suggesting the improvement in sentiment was concentrated in technology shares.
Positioning provides another constraint on the dollar and a potential source of support for bullion. MUFG argued that the dollar’s failure to extend gains after stronger inflation readings had probably encouraged investors to reduce bullish positions, identifying the DXY’s 200-week moving average near 102.10 as resistance. My interpretation is that gold remains caught between geopolitical uncertainty and expectations of further tightening: a sustained decline in oil and Treasury yields would ease inflation and rate concerns, whereas renewed energy disruption could initially hurt bullion if it pushes yields and the dollar higher. The October 27–28 Fed meeting and next week’s PCE inflation release remain key catalysts.

Gold is trading around 4,135 maintaining a bearish structure as price continues to form lower highs beneath a descending trendline. After breaking below the 4,220 resistance level, gold rebounded from the 4,100–4,110 support zone but failed to sustain its recovery above the 4,150–4,180 consolidation range, suggesting that selling pressure remains elevated.
RSI stands at around 44, below the neutral 50 level, indicating weakening momentum, while MACD has turned bearish, with the MACD line below the signal line and the histogram slipping into negative territory. From here, a break below 4,100 could expose the next support at 4,065, followed by 3,935 if downside pressure intensifies. On the upside, a sustained move above 4,180 could support a recovery toward 4,220, while stronger resistance remains around 4,250–4,300. Overall, the short-term bias remains bearish unless gold can reclaim the nearby resistance zone and break above the descending trendline.
