*Bitcoin retreated toward 81,000-82,000, while Ethereum underperformed and fell below $2,500 amid broader risk aversion.
*Hot CPI drives macro pressure: Stronger inflation revived Fed tightening expectations, pushing Treasury yields and the dollar higher while reducing demand for speculative assets.
*Near-term risks remain tilted lower: Leveraged liquidations, weak ETF flows and geopolitical inflation risks may sustain volatility, though softer data or a Fed pause could support recovery.
The cryptocurrency market experienced a notable decline in the latest session, with both Bitcoin and Ethereum coming under selling pressure amid a broader risk-off environment. Bitcoin retreated toward the 81,000–82,000 area after trading higher earlier in the week, while Ethereum fell more sharply, sliding below $2,500. The move reflected a market-wide pullback in digital assets as investors reacted to macroeconomic developments and reduced appetite for riskier holdings.
The primary catalyst was the hotter-than-expected September U.S. Consumer Price Index release. Headline inflation rose 3.7 percent year-over-year, exceeding the 3.6 percent consensus and accelerating from the prior month, while core measures also came in firmer than anticipated. The data revived expectations of further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve, lifting Treasury yields and strengthening the U.S. dollar. Cryptocurrencies, which have traded as macro-sensitive risk assets, faced direct pressure as higher rate expectations reduced the relative appeal of non-yielding assets. This mirrored the broader equity market sell-off, particularly in technology and AI-related stocks, reinforcing a cautious stance across speculative markets.
Additional factors compounded the decline. Earlier liquidations of leveraged positions in the futures market had already weakened near-term technical support, while mixed institutional flows—including intermittent outflows from spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs—limited buying interest. Ethereum underperformed Bitcoin, consistent with its greater sensitivity to equity market movements and weaker recent institutional demand. Elevated oil prices stemming from ongoing Middle East geopolitical tensions further contributed to the inflation narrative weighing on risk assets.
In the near term, the direction for Bitcoin and Ethereum will likely remain closely tied to shifts in interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields, and subsequent economic data. A sustained moderation in inflation or clearer signals of a pause in Fed tightening could help stabilise prices and encourage a recovery toward recent highs.

ETH, H4:
Ethereum has broken below its consolidation range near the February high and is now testing critical support at $2,385. The breakdown signals a deterioration in near-term momentum and places the cryptocurrency at an important technical juncture.
A decisive break and sustained close below $2,385 would confirm a bearish structural shift and could trigger a deeper wave of selling pressure. Under this scenario, ETH may extend its decline toward the key psychological support at $2,000.
Conversely, a firm defence of $2,385 could allow Ethereum to stabilize and stage a technical rebound. However, the outlook would remain vulnerable unless ETH can reclaim the former consolidation range and restore its previous bullish structure.
