Key Takeaways:

*USD/JPY holds near 157–158 as wide interest-rate differentials continue to favor yen-funded carry trades.

*Gradual BoJ tightening contrasts with higher U.S. rates, while 160 remains a key level for potential Japanese intervention.

*BoJ signals, U.S. economic data, and Treasury yields will shape near-term moves. Sustained yen strength likely requires clearer progress in narrowing the yield gap.

Market Summary:

The Japanese yen has continued to display relative softness against most Group-of-10 currencies in recent sessions, with USD/JPY hovering in the mid-to-high 157 range after briefly testing levels near 159. The currency’s underperformance reflects a combination of structural and cyclical factors that have limited sustained appreciation even amid intermittent support from policy signals and intervention risks. While the yen has recovered from deeper lows seen earlier in the year, it remains one of the weaker performers among major currencies on a year-to-date and multi-year basis.

The dominant driver remains the still-wide interest rate differential between Japan and other major economies. The Bank of Japan’s policy rate stands at 1.25 percent following its September increase, the highest level in decades, yet this remains substantially below the Federal Reserve’s target range near 3.75–4.00 percent and rates in several other G10 jurisdictions. This gap continues to favor carry trades funded by the yen, exerting ongoing depreciation pressure. Although BoJ officials have maintained a data-dependent stance and signaled readiness for further gradual tightening—with markets pricing a higher probability of a December move than an October one—the pace has not been rapid enough to meaningfully close the differential in the near term.

Additional headwinds include Japan’s fiscal dynamics and external balances, alongside sensitivity to shifts in U.S. monetary expectations. Hotter U.S. inflation data earlier in the month initially reinforced dollar strength, though subsequent moderation in October Fed hike probabilities has tempered some of that pressure. Japanese authorities have repeatedly underscored vigilance against excessive yen weakness, with the 160 level widely viewed as a potential trigger for further verbal or actual intervention following earlier coordinated actions.

Looking to the week ahead, the yen is likely to remain range-bound and reactive to cross-currents from central bank communications and economic data. Key events include any further BoJ rhetoric ahead of its late-October meeting, U.S. economic releases, and movements in Treasury yields. Overall, while intervention risks and gradual policy normalization provide a floor, the structural rate differential suggests that significant yen appreciation will require clearer progress in closing the yield gap.

Technical Analysis

EUR/JPY, H4:

EUR/JPY remains in a broader downtrend but has recently entered a consolidation phase near its recent lows. The latest price action has formed a higher-low pattern, suggesting that selling pressure may be easing and raising the possibility of an emerging bullish reversal.

A decisive breakout above the immediate resistance at 178.05 would strengthen the bullish outlook, confirm improving upward momentum and provide a stronger technical signal that the pair may be transitioning toward a recovery. Conversely, failure to overcome this resistance could leave EUR/JPY vulnerable to renewed selling pressure and further consolidation near its recent lows. Until the pair breaks above 178.05, the potential bullish reversal remains unconfirmed, with this level serving as the key threshold for determining the next directional move.

Resistance Levels:178.05, 179.90

Support Levels:176.15, 174.50
