*The EUR trades near multi-month lows as violent protests and fiscal concerns in France undermine investor confidence.
*Eurozone headline inflation accelerated to 3.8%, while core inflation edged up to 2.5%, partly driven by higher energy prices. Although persistent inflation could support further tightening, rising borrowing costs and economic headwinds complicate the ECB’s policy outlook.
*Upcoming economic data, and developments in France are likely to drive near-term EUR volatility. While expectations of further ECB tightening may offer some support.
The euro has faced renewed downward pressure at the start of the week, trading near multi-month lows against the U.S. dollar amid escalating political and fiscal concerns in France. Widespread protests across several French cities over the weekend descended into violent clashes between demonstrators and police, involving looting, fires and significant arrests. The unrest, rooted in cost-of-living pressures, elevated fuel costs and broader discontent, has intensified market worries about the country’s fiscal trajectory and political stability ahead of the 2027 presidential election. French-German bond yield spreads widened notably, reaching levels not seen since the eurozone debt crisis, reflecting heightened risk premiums and fears that reform efforts could face further obstacles.
Recent eurozone economic data have presented a mixed picture. Headline inflation accelerated to 3.8 percent in September from 3.2 percent the previous month, driven predominantly by a sharp rise in energy prices linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions. Core inflation edged higher to 2.5 percent, with services also firming modestly. While the economy has shown resilience so far this year, with growth remaining positive across most member states, higher energy costs and rising long-term interest rates are expected to act as headwinds in the coming quarters.
The European Central Bank has maintained a data-dependent and measured approach to monetary policy. After delivering 25-basis-point rate increases in both June and September, bringing the deposit facility rate to 2.50 percent, policymakers have signalled no urgency for an immediate further move at the late-October meeting. Officials have emphasised that while the energy shock is too large to ignore, evidence of significant second-round effects on wages and broader prices remains limited so far. Market pricing currently leans toward a possible additional hike later in the year, most likely in December, though higher sovereign yields are already contributing to tighter financial conditions.
In the near term, the euro is likely to remain sensitive to developments in French politics and fiscal spreads, as well as shifts in energy prices and broader risk sentiment. Persistent inflation could support a more restrictive ECB stance and provide some underpinning for the currency, yet political uncertainty and any widening of peripheral spreads risk keeping the single currency under pressure.

EUR/USD, H4:
EUR/USD has moderated from its recent highs following an upside breakout from a triangle pattern near its recent lows. Despite the ensuing technical retracement, the pair continues to hold above the breakout level, suggesting that the bullish reversal structure remains intact and that the recent pullback may represent a temporary consolidation rather than a resumption of the prevailing downtrend.
As long as EUR/USD holds above the 1.1183 support level, the pair could maintain its recovery trajectory, with a sustained rebound potentially opening the door for further upside. Conversely, a decisive break below 1.1183 would undermine the bullish setup, raise the risk of a failed breakout and potentially expose the pair to renewed selling pressure. Until this key support is breached, the near-term technical bias remains tilted to the upside.
Resistance Levels: 1.1390, 1.1700
