Key Takeaways:

*Hot CPI revived tightening concerns: Headline inflation reached 3.7% year-on-year and core inflation rose to 2.6%, with price pressures extending beyond energy.

*The dollar’s rally faded: DXY initially approached 102.9 before retreating toward 102.06 as Treasury yields declined and Fed officials urged patience.

*Gold recovered after sharp selling: Bullion rebounded from around $4,078 toward $4,146 as dollar strength and yield pressure eased.

Market Summary:

The US dollar and gold remain driven by the balance between persistent inflation and the Federal Reserve’s willingness to tighten policy further. September’s US CPI rose 0.6% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year, while core inflation increased 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually, exceeding expectations of 0.2% and 2.5%. Gasoline prices surged 9.1% during the month, accounting for more than half the headline increase, but rising shelter, recreation and used-vehicle costs showed that price pressures extended beyond energy. The report initially pushed the dollar toward an 18-month high near 102.9, lifted Treasury yields and triggered renewed selling in gold as markets increased the probability of an October rate hike.

However, the dollar struggled to sustain its advance as Fed officials tempered expectations of immediate action. Michelle Bowman favoured allowing time to assess September’s rate increase, while Mary Daly said further tightening was probably necessary but signalled no urgency to act at the October 27–28 meeting. October hike expectations consequently retreated from roughly 50% immediately after CPI toward the 30%–40% range in subsequent reports. A Treasury rally also brought the 10-year yield down to approximately 5.13%, helping DXY ease toward 102.06 early Thursday. EUR/USD recovered to $1.1187, sterling rebounded to $1.3224 and the yen strengthened toward 157.82 per dollar. The dollar therefore retains support from inflation and further tightening risks, although declining yields have weakened its immediate momentum.

Gold experienced the opposite sequence, falling sharply after CPI before recovering as the dollar and yields retreated. Spot bullion traded near $4,078 during Wednesday’s sell-off in the reporting provided, while a later Thursday Asian-session snapshot showed a recovery toward $4,146. Systematic selling added to the pressure: TD Securities said gold’s failure to overcome resistance around $4,200 encouraged speculative liquidation. Nevertheless, the bank cited discretionary investment positions, ETF demand and central-bank purchases as sources of support around $4,000–$4,100. These flows may cushion further declines, but the area remains an analyst-assessed support zone rather than a guaranteed floor. Gold’s inflation-hedging appeal continues to compete with the higher opportunity cost created by elevated interest rates.

Attention now turns to US PPI, retail sales and further Fed guidance, which could determine whether the post-CPI reversal continues. Strong producer-price inflation alongside resilient consumption would reinforce the case for further tightening, potentially renewing dollar strength and limiting gold’s recovery. Softer readings could extend the retreat in yields and provide bullion with additional relief. The Fed’s Beige Book adds complexity: consumer spending showed limited growth, while businesses reported persistent fuel, tariff and insurance costs and pressure on margins. This combination leaves policymakers balancing inflation persistence against economic sensitivity to higher borrowing costs, keeping both the dollar and gold highly responsive to incoming data.

Technical Analysis

Dollar Index, H4

The US Dollar Index (DXY) is showing signs of a short-term bearish correction following a strong rally from the 98.65 support area toward the recent highs above 102.50. Price has struggled to sustain its advance above the 102.50 resistance level and has now pulled back sharply toward 102.10, suggesting that buying momentum is weakening after the extended upward move. Despite this pullback, the broader short-term structure remains bullish as long as price holds above the key support levels below.

Momentum indicators are currently leaning bearish. The RSI has fallen to around 45, moving below the neutral 50 level, indicating that selling pressure has strengthened in the latest session. Meanwhile, the MACD shows a bearish crossover below the signal line, while the histogram has turned slightly negative. This confirms that short-term momentum is fading and supports the possibility of further downside consolidation.Overall, the near-term outlook for DXY is cautiously bearish, although the broader recovery structure remains intact for now.

Resistance Levels: 102.50, 103.40
