Key Takeaways:

*The dollar eased, but its underlying support remains as oil and US yields fell, while Fed inflation concerns kept it near Monday’s 18-month high.

*Gold is moving with rate expectations as much as geopolitical risk. It fell to $4,169 on Monday when oil and the dollar rose, then recovered to about $4,188 as oil eased Tuesday.

*Wednesday’s US CPI is the next decisive catalyst. A hot core reading could support the dollar and weigh on gold by raising Fed hike expectations; a softer reading could reverse that pressure.

Market Summary:

The US dollar remains supported by a combination of elevated Treasury yields, persistent inflation concerns and Federal Reserve officials’ willingness to tighten policy further. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said Monday that price pressures extend beyond oil into tariffs, technology components and services, and that a restrictive policy stance is appropriate. She did not commit to a rate hike at the October meeting. The Dollar Index approached an 18-month high near 102.6 on Monday, then eased to around 102.39 in Tuesday’s Asian session as oil fell and the US 10-year yield declined to about 5.19% after the bond-market holiday. The pullback therefore looks more like a pause in the dollar’s advance than evidence that its rate support has disappeared.

The yen illustrates the competing forces in forex. USD/JPY traded above 158 as the US–Japan yield gap continued to favour the dollar, but the pair eased to around 158.22 on Tuesday. Japan’s wholesale prices rose 6.8% year on year in September, below the 7.6% forecast; that is slower-than-expected growth in prices, not an annual contraction. The reading still leaves Bank of Japan policy in focus, while concern about excessive yen weakness could make traders more cautious about chasing USD/JPY higher. More broadly, the dollar’s recent safe-haven support is not automatic: it softened on Tuesday even as Asian stocks fell, because oil and US yields were also declining.

Gold has been caught between geopolitical demand and the prospect of higher interest rates. It reached a one-week high on Monday, but later slipped to $4,169.10 an ounce as the dollar firmed and oil’s rise renewed inflation concerns. By 6:24 a.m. GMT Tuesday, spot gold had recovered to $4,188.27 as oil eased. These moves show why Middle East tension does not necessarily produce a sustained gold rally: if higher energy costs increase expected Fed tightening and bond yields, they can raise the opportunity cost of holding bullion. The recent price range reflects changing forces during different sessions, rather than a single steady direction.

Wednesday’s US CPI is the central test for both markets. Traders in Tuesday’s Reuters gold report assigned about a 19% probability to an October Fed hike but a much higher probability to one by December. A stronger-than-expected core inflation reading could bring an October move back into consideration, supporting the dollar and yields while pressuring gold. Softer inflation could do the reverse, especially if oil continues to retreat. The reaction will depend on how the data change the expected rate path, not simply whether headline inflation is high because of energy.

Technical Analysis

Gold market chart showing price action with blue trendlines, support/resistance levels, and a bullish badge dated 13th October 2026; includes RSI and MACD indicators.

Gold, H4

Gold is showing signs of a short-term bullish recovery, rebounding from the 4,065.00–4,100.00 support zone after an extended period of downward pressure. Price has recently broken above the descending trendline and is consolidating around 4,170.00, suggesting that buyers are attempting to regain control. However, the recovery is approaching a key resistance area near 4,220.00, which will determine whether the rebound can develop into a more sustained upward move.

Momentum indicators suggest that bullish momentum is losing some strength. The RSI is around 51, but below its moving average, indicating that buying pressure has moderated following the recent rebound. Meanwhile, the MACD remains near the zero line, while the histogram has turned slightly negative. This suggests that the bullish momentum is fading in the short term, increasing the possibility of consolidation or a modest pullback before another directional move. Overall, the near-term outlook for gold is cautiously bullish, but confirmation is still needed.

Resistance Levels: 4220.00, 4320.00

Support Levels: 4100.00, 4065.00
