*NZD/USD climbs toward 0.5650–0.5700 as markets price in an 80% chance of a 25bp hike to 3.00% on October 28.
*Q3 CPI is forecast at 0.8% QoQ and 3.8% YoY, with persistent price pressures supporting tightening expectations despite weak consumption and a softer labour market.
*A stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce rate-hike bets and extend NZD gains, while softer inflation may weaken the currency by reducing expectations for further RBNZ tightening.
The New Zealand dollar has displayed renewed strength in recent sessions, advancing for several consecutive days and lifting NZD/USD toward its highest levels since late September, around the 0.5650–0.5700 area. This recovery follows a period of earlier weakness and reflects a combination of firming market expectations for further Reserve Bank of New Zealand tightening and a more supportive backdrop for higher-yielding currencies. The kiwi’s relative outperformance against some G10 peers has been underpinned by the prospect of additional policy action, even as domestic demand indicators point to ongoing economic softness.
The RBNZ currently maintains the Official Cash Rate at 2.75 percent following a 25-basis-point increase in early September, its second consecutive hike. Policymakers have emphasised a data-dependent approach, with Chief Economist Paul Conway recently describing the late-October decision as “completely open” while noting that a higher OCR remains the most likely next step. Money markets are pricing an approximately 80 percent probability of a further 25-basis-point rise to 3.00 percent at the October 28 meeting. This expectation has provided a key source of support for the currency, as higher New Zealand yields enhance its relative attractiveness.
Recent economic data illustrate this tension. While monthly price indicators have pointed to persistent inflationary pressures, electronic card spending figures suggest stagnating retail activity and likely negative real consumption growth. Unemployment has edged higher, and broader growth has been modest, complicating the case for aggressive further tightening. Against this backdrop, the third-quarter Consumer Price Index release later this week stands as the final major domestic data point ahead of the RBNZ decision. Consensus forecasts centre on a quarterly rise of around 0.8 percent and an annual rate of approximately 3.8 percent, down from 4.1 percent previously and broadly in line with or slightly below the central bank’s own projections.
In the near term, the CPI outcome is expected to be pivotal for kiwi price action. A firmer-than-anticipated reading would likely reinforce rate-hike expectations, supporting further gains in the New Zealand dollar, particularly if accompanied by any broader US dollar softness. Overall, while the path of least resistance currently favours modest strength on the back of tightening bets, the currency remains highly sensitive to confirmation or disappointment on the inflation front.

NZDUSD, H4:
NZD/USD has maintained a bullish trajectory following its breakout above a week-long consolidation range, signalling improving market momentum and a potential shift away from its previous bearish structure. However, the pair is now encountering strong resistance near 0.5687, where selling pressure could trigger a near-term technical retracement as traders lock in profits.
The 50% Fibonacci retracement level at 0.5632 represents a key support threshold for the ongoing recovery. If NZD/USD manages to hold above this level during a pullback, the broader bullish structure would remain intact, potentially providing a foundation for renewed buying momentum and another attempt to break above the immediate resistance at 0.5687. A decisive breakout above this barrier would strengthen the bullish outlook and open the door for further upside. Conversely, a sustained break below 0.5632 would weaken the current bullish setup and increase the risk of a deeper correction. Until this support is breached, the near-term bias remains tilted to the upside, with 0.5687 serving as the key resistance to overcome.
Resistance Levels: 0.5687, 0.5788
Support Levels: 0.5580, 0.5490
