*The index fell around 0.35% to 51,670 as healthcare weakness, mixed bank earnings and a global semiconductor sell-off pressured sentiment.
*Geopolitical risks remain secondary: Middle East attacks have kept oil prices and Treasury yields elevated, though chip weakness and earnings reactions were the main drivers of the decline.
*CPI becomes the next catalyst: Hotter inflation could reinforce Fed tightening expectations and pressure equities, while a softer print may lower yields and support a recovery.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined in the previous session, closing approximately 0.35 percent lower at around 51,670 after snapping a short winning streak. The blue-chip index faced selling pressure from a combination of company-specific results and broader sector weakness, particularly in healthcare and technology-related components. Johnson & Johnson shares fell sharply despite topping profit estimates, while mixed outcomes from major banks, including some revenue shortfalls, contributed to the downward move. A global semiconductor sell-off, triggered by comments from Broadcom’s chief executive comparing aspects of artificial intelligence investment to casino gambling and reports of technological progress by Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT, further weighed on market sentiment and dragged related names lower.
Houthi attacks in the Middle East have played a supporting role in the recent sell-off. Ongoing strikes on Saudi infrastructure and shipping routes have kept crude oil prices elevated, sustaining inflation concerns and contributing to higher Treasury yields that pressure equity valuations overall. However, in Tuesday’s session, energy stocks actually provided some offsetting support, and the dominant catalysts for the Dow’s decline were the chip sector weakness and earnings reactions rather than an acute escalation in oil-driven risk aversion.
Attention now turns to today’s September Consumer Price Index release, a key data point that could reshape near-term price action for the index. Markets expect headline inflation to rise around 0.5 to 0.6 percent month-over-month, lifting the annual rate toward 3.6 percent, with core CPI anticipated near 0.2 percent. A hotter-than-expected reading, particularly in the core measure, would likely reinforce expectations of a more restrictive Federal Reserve path, potentially lifting yields further and exerting additional downside pressure on the Dow and broader equities. Conversely, a softer print could ease rate-hike concerns, support valuations, and help stabilise or lift the index in the sessions ahead.

Dow Jones, H4:
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has broken above its descending channel, signalling that the previous bearish phase may be ending and that a bullish reversal is beginning to take shape.
However, the index faced rejection at immediate resistance near 52,261.75 and has since entered a technical retracement. The pullback does not invalidate the improving outlook, provided the Dow remains supported above 51,414.90.
A firm defence of 51,414.90 would preserve the emerging upward structure and support another attempt to challenge the 52,261.75 resistance. Conversely, a decisive break below this support would weaken the bullish setup, raise the risk of a false channel breakout and potentially lead to a deeper correction.
Resistance Levels: 52,261.75, 53,295.65
Support Levels: 51,414.90, 50,390.10
